Description

FOR SALE; PORSCHE STANDARD STAR 238 // MUSEUM QUALITY RESTORATION // EX COLDRIDGE COLLECTION

EQUIPMENT
2-Cylinder Air Cooled Diesel Engine, 10-Speed Gearbox, Remote Thermometer, Triple Bearing Crankshaft, Oil Centrifuge, Hydraulic Locking Differential

EXTERIOR
Restored to factory specification, this Porsche Standard Star is immaculate. Its vibrant red coachwork is spotless, retaining a deep lustre, it presents as a museum piece rather than a piece of agricultural equipment.

The tractor was subject to complete rebuild in the 1990’s by a collector and enthusiast based in California. A letter from this owner details his entire process, down to the inclusion of various new old stock pieces and even the number of layers of paint, base coat and rust proofing applied to the vehicle.

The quality of the restoration is so good that the Porsche won best in show on 3 different occasions before being brought over to the UK.

It was then displayed for a number of years in the famous Coldridge Collection, one of the UK’s largest private collections of tractors consisting of over 70 rare and collectable agricultural vehicles.

INTERIOR
As a cabin-less tractor, the Standard Star 238 doesn’t have much in the way of an interior. The layout is more functional than comfortable, consisting of a cast metal seat and large black plastic steering wheel its quite sparse to say the least. Passengers can enjoy the ride on either wheel arch, one of which features a bar or grab handle for support.

It does have an external thermometer and rev counter to feed back vital information to the driver, which was considered quite a luxury in 1960’s German farming.

All of the above is completely factory correct, having been restored or replaced with new old stock parts during the Porsche’s extensive restoration.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Mechanically and visually the 2-Cylinder air cooled engine is impeccable. During the Porsche’s restoration it was subject to a complete rebuild with all major components refurbished or replaced with new old stock parts. All visible parts were re-finished with new chrome/nickle plating on the relevant parts.

The motor produces just 26bhp which gives the Standard Star a top speed of 11mph. It is not the fastest motor Porsche have ever built but for the purposes of farming, where torque and consistency are key, it comes into its own.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The steel wheels present very well, having been media blasted, rust-proofed and painted during the restoration they still retain a clean and even finish.

HISTORY FILE
1 of just 3,400 examples built by Porsche between 1961-1962, very few Standard Stars still remain some 60 years later.

This example was owned and restored by a Californian collector who decided to downsize his collection in the mid 1990’s, after undertaking the long process of turning the Porsche into a show winning example. The vehicle came to the UK and became part of the famous Coldridge Collection, which the owner and curator Michael Thorne selectively sourced over 22 years. After acquiring over 70 vehicles he decided to focus solely on the Massey Ferguson brand as he could no longer keep up with his restoration projects and so the Porsche Standard Star 238 was moved on.

It sits today as an exemplary and rare piece of history that gives a real insight into one of the motor industry most iconic brands.
