In the late 1960’s, changing market priorities put pressure on Porsche AG to develop a new production model. As fears of a US rear-engined car ban lingered in the air, Porsche executives agreed on the future of the marque being a front-engined, water-cooled V8 four-seater GT. The culmination of these efforts, the Porsche 928, proved a success for almost two decades.
Along its 17 years of production, the 928 underwent multiple changes: a gradual increase of engine capacity (4.7L in the ‘S’ models, 5L across the range from the mid-1980’s, and 5.4L in the GTS variants), several revisions to the design of the camshafts, injection systems, bodywork (antenna, lamps) and gearboxes (3 and 4 speed automatics, 5-speed manuals), plus added amenities, like ABS and airbags. In its history, the 928 sported a horsepower range going from 237hp in its first 1978 iteration to 345hp in the 1995 GTS, with featured a few special variants made in very limited numbers —Weissach, Jubilee, Clubsport.
This low-mileage S4 was delivered new to Japan until 2016, when it was exported to Germany and bought a year later by us. Finished in a tasteful slate-on-mahogany colour combination, this 928 S4 has covered less than 20,000 kilometres from new.
