Towards the late 60’s both Porsche and Volkswagen had a similar problem. They were both looking for a new model. Porsche was looking for a replacement for its “entry" 912 and Volkswagen for its Type 34 Karmann Ghia. Volkswagen was contractually bound to Porsche, for it to design one more model. This agreement formed the foundation of Porsche’s existence. Volkswagen started up the process under Ferdinand Piëch, who just happened to be Porsche grandson. An interesting little fact is Porsche to this very day still maintains they started up the 914 design rather than Gugelot Design GmbH that together with Bayer had been presenting a joint design for a number of years. Although the 914 was a joint Volkswagen and Porsche effort and Volkswagen engines were used, it was never sold as a Volkswagen. It was called a VW-Porsche even though it was never sold by Volkswagen dealerships. Our 914 is a 1973 model that was registered for the first time in the Netherlands in 1985. Since then it has only ever had one owner. Clearly a case of long term ownership. The 914 has always been a car for enthusiasts and this one is no different. The car has always been perfectly maintained and looked after. The fine bodywork has nice and thin, correctly aligned panel work. It has “Bahia Rot” finish that has had a cosmetic re-spray. The paintwork is still in very good condition. The interior is in very original shape. The carpets have been replaced with those of the same colour and the seat upholstery is in fine shape. Mechanically there is nothing wrong with this Porsche 914. Mechanically the car is simple and therefore very reliable. The 2.0 litre 4-cylinder mid-engined placed unit delivers 99 Hp. The engine is coupled to a 5-speed gearbox with precise action. For a long time, the 914 was not seen as a full-bodied Porsche by the marques followers, meaning that many have bitten the dust along the way and therefore good examples are becoming increasingly rare. The boot of reasonably priced 911’s has long left its moorings, the one for the 914 is still in dock for the time being. Our advice is not to wait too long.
