Description
With 911 looks and a four-cylinder engine, the 912 is perhaps the ideal fusion of Porsche’s engineering genius with economic practicality. Buyers certainly liked the combination – in 1966 the 912 outsold the 911 two to one.
This 912, chassis 353326, was sold new to a US serviceman and optioned with a five-speed transmission, a special finish in Gulf Blue, dual Durant mirrors, and a five-gauge dash layout.
By 1972, the 912 was acquired by its second owner and spent the following 38 years in Southern California’s mild climate. In 1990, a show-quality restoration was undertaken by Ray Stephens Automotive in Costa Mesa, California, including a full repaint. The seats, dash pad, and door panels were re-trimmed in leather. Koni suspension and Cibie headlights were also added. This 912 retains inviting hallmarks of originality, including chrome, keys, steering wheel, and Blaupunkt radio. Its five wheels are date-coded 1966, and the overall presentation of this pampered 912 is simply superb.
Setting off for a test drive, this outstanding 912 was found to perform very well, making good power through the gears, and exhibiting very competent road manners. An outstanding example of one of Porsche’s most successful models, any enthusiast would be privileged to add this Gulf Blue jewel to a personal stable.
