Description

This Porsche 356 A Cabriolet left the factory on March 31, 1958, destined for New York’s Hoffman Motors. As noted by a copy of its factory Kardex on file, it was finished in black with US-specification bumpers and whitewall tires. In November 1974, this stunning Cabriolet was purchased by the consignor, an avid Porsche enthusiast, after which it was partially disassembled and put in static storage awaiting refurbishment. A thorough restoration of this 356 commenced in 2016, with an aim towards retaining originality while bringing it back to its as-delivered condition.

The consignor recounts that the body, in fine condition with panels bearing the no. 322 as per factory custom, was stripped and refinished in single-stage Glasurit black paint by award-winning craftsman Mike Marcelic. A new convertible top and Verona Green leather interior were fitted, completing the Porsche’s return to its incredible factory color combination. The original transaxle was overhauled, while a correct type 616/1 engine was rebuilt and upgraded using Mahle pistons and cylinders, counterweighted crankshaft and forged connecting rods, and an aluminum oil cooler. Since this show-quality restoration, the Cabriolet has been exhibited at concours events including the 2021 Hennessy Concours (People’s Choice Award), 2022 Werks Reunion Amelia Island (First in Class), and 2022 Deutsche Klassic (Best in Show). Offered from 48 years of single ownership, this 356 A Cabriolet is now ready for further showings and exhibits a rare combination of fantastic quality and desirable specification.
