Description
Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1947, the Peugeot Type 203 was launched as an entry-level sedan, ideal for a family. The 203, however, could also be ordered as a utilitarian van and further modified to fit a customer’s needs for any number of specialized commercial applications, such as this ambulance with its rear compartment equipped with stretchers and benches.
Retaining the painted lettering “Hopital de la Filature de Laine Peignée de Malmerspach S.A.” on both the sides and tail of this ambulance, it is believed that the Peugeot was used on the grounds of a wool mill in Malmerspach, likely owned by brothers Hans and Fritz Schlumpf.
As part of the Schlumpf Reserve Collection for many years, the Peugeot was stored in Malmerspach prior to the Mullin Collection’s acquisition of the ambulance in 2008. This commercial Peugeot is an interesting piece of Alsace-centric automotive history.
