Transmission: 4 gears, Manual gearbox

Fondness is the first emotion you get when seeing a MG TD. The model’s friendly aura, its compact format and typically British air.: The TD is and remains a very jolly car to see and even better one to drive around in. The TD is closely related to its predecessor the TC, it does feature improved handling thanks to its rack and pinion system and coil instead of leaf springs. 30,000 TD’s were built before the TF followed it up in late 1953.

This late June 1953 TD has not got a beige, dark-green or red finish but a fresh broken white with a lovely dark-red leather interior. The bodywork and chassis are very neat and naturally rust-free. In the past this MG was subject to a restoration, leaving the panelwork straight and nicely aligned. The hood is in a tidy, functional state, functional being relative with a small 50’s British roadster.

The interior has developed a lovely patina over the years, totally suited to the car. The seats are comfortable and the undamaged leather is still nice and supple. The dashboard is in keeping with the rest of the interior clad in red and looks the part. All instruments and switchgear work exactly as intended.

The simple and sportive 1,250 cc engine works a treat and is sure to bring a smile to your face. The manual 4-speed is pleasant to use. The Mark II edition we have here is by far the most popular version. It is more powerful thanks to a higher compression ratio, improved air inlet through the manifold, larger SU H4 carburettors and improved valves and valve function. The result is near 60 hp of English thoroughbreds. Despite its 70 years of age, the sportscar character this roadster was marketed with is still very much in evidence. This MG just loves hugging the country lanes thanks to its good suspension, brakes and steering.

If you are on the lookout to have oodles of fun in; this definitely is the TD for you.
