Description

Transmission: 4 gears, Manual gearbox
Model year: 2021
Model code: W111
Registration number: MB-03-47

This is a top quality W111. Not just good looking but has some interesting features setting it apart from the rest. This Mercedes-Benz W111 (W111.026) has a brilliant colour scheme and was ordered with the very rare optional manual gearbox with the floor mounted gearstick instead of the usual steering wheel mounted version. Besides all of the above this 280SE 3.5 has been extensively overhauled in recent times.

This Mercedes-Benz 280SE entered onto the German roads for the first time in February 1970. There is no other description other than that the car is in superb condition. The first owner choose for a brilliant colour scheme of metallic Tunis Beige on the outside and green leather internally. After 50 years it has lost none of its allure. The bodywork is in excellent condition. The gaps between the thin panels are as straight as they were in 1970. All the chrome brightwork is also in very good shape.

The Tunis Beige metallic paintwork has been thinly resprayed and remains in splendid condition. At first glance the high quality of the workmanship is obvious the moment you clap eyes on the car. The interior trim is exquisite with its completely original perfectly cared for green leather still delightfully supple and having developed a lovely patina. The dark green carpets are pristine, the wooden dashboard inlay has been neatly maintained. The door cards are clad in green leather and add to the ambience. A Becker Mexico radio and sunroof also form part of the itinerary. The smart looking gauges and controls work perfectly.

The car has recently been overhauled and is in rude health. The 280SE 3.5 is powered by a M116 V8 engine with a 3.5 litre bore. The 3.5 was the first post-war Mercedes-Benz to have an engine volume greater than 3 litres. The V8 produces 200 Ps getting the 280SE to a top of 210 km/hr and sprinting to 100km/hr in 9.5 seconds. Years of diligent extensive maintenance has kept this 280SE in tip-top shape. The engine runs wonderfully smooth. The 4-speed manual gearbox with its fine gear ratios shifts with the precision of a Swiss clock. The brakes are responsive and more than up to the job. The W111’s suspension is geared up to providing a most comfortable ride. It is quite amazing to experience levels of comfort equitable to that of a modern car.

All recent work has been meticulously recorded in the very extensive invoices. More than € 23,000.- has been invested in the upkeep of this lovely Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 by its previous owner.

To sum it all up: This is both a great looking as well as mechanically very sound 280SE in a fetching colour scheme with a rare manual “floorshift” transmission.
