The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is among the most admired modern-day supercars. Beginning development in 2006, Mercedes-AMG sought to deliver a contemporary, albeit more sinister, spiritual successor to the marque’s iconic midcentury grand tourer, the 300 SL Gullwing coupe. Ecstatic press, design awards, and most importantly, orders, poured into Affalterbach at a prodigious rate following the unveiling of the SLS AMG at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Without exception, it has proven to be an exceptionally desirable modern supercar since day one.
From the outset, the SLS was destined to be the ultimate grand tourer. Its 6.2-liter V-8 front-mid engine produces a tumultuous 563 horsepower, propelling the car from 0–60 mph in 3.7 seconds toward a top speed of 197 mph. At the time of release, its M159 engine was the most powerful naturally-aspirated engine in production. Utilizing a Getrag double-clutch, seven-speed paddle-shifted transmission, the car is able to shift gears in less than 100 milliseconds. A speed-activated airbrake deploys from the rear hatch to greatly increase downforce, thereby aiding cornering and deacceleration. Rather naturally, all the SLS AMG’s innovative technologies were perfected to their final production configurations after many thousands of miles testing at the Nürburgring Nordschliefe and Imola GP circuits.
This 2011 SLS AMG Coupe is finished in the rare and alluring color combination of matte designo Magno Alanite Grey over an exclusive Classic Red leather interior. It was delivered new to the consignor via Keyes European Mercedes-Benz in Van Nuys. Additional factory specifications include a slate of desirable options including exterior and interior carbon trim packages, Bang & Olufsen BeoSound system, memory package, and AMG Performance steering wheel with Alcantara grips. The car is underpinned by the very rare AMG Performance suspension system (486), which provided a bevy of stiffer components which greatly improves handling dynamics for track use. Interestingly, this analog option costing $1,500 was only available on the 2011 coupe. A set of silver-painted brake calipers are tucked behind the standard set of forged alloy wheels.
Since delivery to the consignor in May 2011, this handsome SLS AMG has traveled fewer than 3,470 miles within their care at time of cataloguing. Routine maintenance and servicing have been exclusively performed by the originating dealer, with its last entry coming in January 2021. It is notably accompanied by its original presentation book, manuals, window sticker, purchase order, car cover, and service invoices from new.
As the cornerstone of Mercedes-AMG’s modern resurgence, this nicely specified SLS AMG offered from the collection of its original owner would be a superior acquisition for even the most discerning of collectors. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/az22.
