Description

Chassis No. WDBSK79FX9F157692

The third Black Series model produced by Mercedes-Benz's AMG division, the SL 65 AMG Black Series was developed by the AMG Performance Studio and represented, in many ways, the ultimate, uncompromising high-performance Mercedes-Benz. Based upon the structure of the stock SL 65, it featured unique carbon fiber composite body panels, including muscularly flared fenders, a rear apron with diffuser fins, and a retractable rear spoiler, and replaced that car's heavy retractable hardtop with a lightweight, fixed bonded roof with integrated roll bar. Together these modifications eliminated a remarkable 551 pounds of weight. Larger disc brakes were fitted, six-piston in front and four-piston in the rear, as well as a coil-spring suspension, adjustable for track time, and a widened track at both ends.

Under the hood was an AMG 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V-12 with AMG sports exhaust and optimized airflow tubing, producing a factory-quoted 670 hp and an utterly remarkable 738 lb/ft of torque. The factory bragged that 0 to 60 mph was achievable in only 3.8 seconds, with the turbocharged power delivered first as a massive thrust, then, seconds later, by a rush of smooth, controlled speed. Top speed was 199 mph, achieved in a comfortable interior with full black leather and Alcantara trim, a smaller diameter flat-bottom steering wheel, and additional extensive carbon fiber trim.

Only 350 examples of the SL 65 AMG Black Series were made, 175 of them for the United States market, almost all of which had already been claimed before they landed on American shores. They have, if anything, been more desirable as 'used cars,' beloved by enthusiasts for their massive power and incredibly nimble drivability. Among these have been Jim Taylor, who bought this SL 65 AMG Black Series in 2015 and has occasionally enjoyed it on the road ever since; at the time of cataloging, it had recorded 12,882 miles. Still in excellent overall condition in its Obsidian Black finish with color-coordinated Exclusive interior, it is accompanied by a small collection of registration and historical paperwork.

This is among the most desired of all modern Mercedes-Benzes – and among the most fun!
