Description

"Launched as the final incarnation of the third-generation SL roadster, the W113 Pagoda 280 SL features the fuel-injected M130 SOHC six-cylinder powerplant producing around 170 brake horsepower when new. The 280 SL replaced the less powerful 230 SL and 250 SL, with some intricate cosmetic changes made to the exterior and interior.
A highly desirable 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL from the final full year of production, this W113 roadster, nicknamed the ‘Pagoda’, has been returned to the UK for sale having resided in the Europe for almost ten years. A left hand drive example, this car is accompanied by a NOVA number and is ready to be registered by its new custodian in the UK or further afield should you wish. This vehicle was purposely sent from Prague to the UK to be prepared for sale by the Warwickshire-based organisation, it is now ready to be enjoyed thanks to extensive preparation work by the UK SL specialist, the SLSHOP.
This 280 SL benefitted from an exterior repaint in Silver by a specialist outfit in Prague, where the interior was also refreshed in the vibrant red leather you see today. This was commissioned by the current owner who was keen to rectify a previous poorly executed interior retrim carried out in the USA where the Pagoda first resided.
Mated to the 2,788cc M130 engine is the original four-speed manual transmission. Being a North American import originally, this 280 SL benefits from a lower-axle ratio for faster acceleration, as well as chrome bumper guards. The vendor reports that the condition of the engine and gearbox is excellent, thanks to a gearbox refurbishment by UK specialist Roger Edwards in 2013. The current owner advises that they have invested significantly in this Pagoda to enable them to compete in the Geneva-Cannes Classic Rally on five separate occasions. The vehicle also came first in the Czech Mercedes-Benz Owners Club Concours competition.
To prepare this vehicle for sale, the vendor commissioned the, UK-based, SLSHOP to carry out extensive work to instil the new owner with confidence to enjoy this Pagoda to the same degree that they have over the years. A snapshot of the work includes a full major service, replacement of the engine mountings, new radiator hoses, replacement injection pump hoses, the removal and refitment of the steering box as well as a complete engine setup and MoT test certificate. Cosmetic improvements include the fitment of European-specification headlamps. These are high-quality reproduction units that have been carefully fitted by the SLSHOP.
The car is supplied with the original brown leather wallet manuals and original data card and a well-presented history past and present. With the model now 60 years old, this is a prime opportunity to acquire a 280 SL Pagoda before values rise even further."
