Description

Registration number: MB-77-12

The Mercedes-Benz Pagoda is an icon instantly recognisable to classic car enthusiasts all over. With its elegant design and upright headlights, this Mercedes followed in the footsteps of the legendary W198 SL Gullwing and convertible. Unlike its predecessor, the Pagoda was exclusively available as an open roadster, clearly designed with a cabriolet feeling in mind. The flowing lines of this model are simply magnificent.

The nickname Pagoda derived from Mercedes' hollow form of the hardtop, strongly reminiscent of the traditional roofs of Chinese pagodas. This characteristic shape is also found in the headrests of this Mercedes. The SL brought immense success to Mercedes-Benz and remains beloved by car enthusiasts to this day. With its beautiful bodywork, powerful six-cylinder engine, and the kind of excellent craftsmanship only Mercedes can provide, the Pagoda belongs to the timeless classics that could only be matched by a few competitors.

Our example at Gallery Aaldering in Brummen dates from 1969, equipped with power steering, and is in original condition. This example was delivered in 1969 to the Mercedes-Benz dealer Auto Stiegler in California, United States.

The car’s bodywork looks neat and does show some minor signs of use picked up over the years. The paintwork is in a tidy and well-maintained condition. Both the chrome bumpers and other details have been well-preserved, as have the characteristic rims. The interior of this open Mercedes-Benz is exceptionally luxurious, with a dashboard that reflects the exclusivity of this car. The quality of the large round gauges and the vertically positioned cluster is of a level that evoked admiration back then, as it still does now. Overall, it is in a neat, presentable condition.

All in all, the construction quality of the SL is of an exceptionally high standard, and this example has been well-maintained. Mechanically, this SL has received the necessary care and is therefore in good condition. Underneath the car, just like the rest of the car, all is in a tidy condition. This Mercedes-Benz comes with the original manual, booklets, and radio manuals.
