- Re-creation of quality, regardless of cost
- An unfamiliar model
- Much more than a sports 190 SL
- Just out of a comprehensive restoration

For amateur drivers who could not have access to the 300 SL, which was too expensive, Mercedes decided in 1955 to produce a version "customer competition" of the 190 SL. Wearing the letter "R" for "Rennsport ", lightened the car by removing the bumper, plus the 190 SLR featured aluminum doors without windows, a low plexiglass windshield, special lightweight seats and special wheels. The engine also benefited from an increased in power. But the project was short-lived: it seems that as the car was refused for the GT class, the 190 SLR was found only in the "Sport Series ", which reduced its chances of success. Mercedes abandoned this project, having produced very few, but the numbers remained a mystery - at the most seven or eight examples, it seems. In any case, two cars continue their production careers in other places, namely in the hands of the Daimler-Benz's Hong Kong agency. Not without success, since one of the two won its category at the Macau Grand Prix in 1956 and the other won in 1959, the Rally of Hong Kong.
The car that we offer is a faithful re-creation of the SLR 190 lightweight. It is based on a Mercedes 190 SL from 1961 sold new in Belgium. Its current Dutch owner acquired in 1999, as it was in a very poor condition, and decided to make a replica of the 190 SLR. For three years, the car has received a complete disassembly, regardless of cost. Thus, the bills that accompany the car show DM 21,000 worth of components. Special doors and an aluminum hood have been made, as well as special seats. The car is equipped with special wheels from this model, with Michelin road tyres. The engine features two Weber carburetors and a sports exhaust system, which gives it a very sporty sound. The restoration is documented by numerous photographs and record, plus there are vintage photos too, articles and many bills. This 190 SLR replica has long been exhibited before being registered in the Netherlands in July 2008. Since then, the car has covered very little distance, hardly exceeding 500km. Expertise from July 2011 mentioned that the car was exceptionally well restored and assigned a value of € 225,000. It is a 190 SL that has been greatly improved with truly breathtaking performance. This car is ready to provide its new owner the pleasure of what could have been a real 190 SL competition version.
