With the 600, Mercedes-Benz will offer the mightiest limousine ever produced. Its 6.3-litre V8 engine with injection giving 51 m/kg of torque and 250hp is capable of propelling this 2.5 tons vehicle to 205 km/h. It also has the best technology available at that time: four-speed automatic transmission with very smooth gear shifts, pneumatic assisted disc braking like the suspensions and sprawling hydraulic system which controls all seat adjustments, windows, doors opening and closing… Comfort-wise, the equipment could not be more complete, with automatic regulating heating and ventilation (dual zone); finishing elements are also beyond all criticism (leather upholstery, chrome decorations, front and rear varnished wooden consoles). Daimler-Benz manufactured 2,677 total units of the "600", including 428 Pullman versions.
Like most other examples aimed at the rich and powerful of this world, this Mercedes 600 Pullman was ordered by the State of Zaire and delivered new on 6 March 1965, in particular for President Mobutu Sese Seko's needs. It survived its demanding official functions and was bought by a German collector in the late 1970s, who then imported it into Europe. It had a new paint job done in its original black colour (ref. G040) in the 1980s and was then kept in good condition, not being much on the road but subject to regular services. Its current owner acquired it in 2005 after being seduced by the vehicle's authenticity and well-preserved condition. Wishing to keep the car's soul but also wanting to optimise its aesthetic and working condition, he then got some restoration work carried out, with the aim of retaining the maximum of its original elements. Among the works done in recent years, we can indeed mention the hydraulic system restoration of internal controls, the radio system upgrade, service of the engine as well as the gearbox and brakes, water pump replacement and a woodwork varnish treatment. Highly-demanding German technical checks were successfully passed, proving the well functioning of the car. This example has rear seats facing each other as well as 6 downward lateral windows. The beautiful red leather interior is in original condition and has a very beautiful patina, despite the driver's seat being more worn than the whole of the upholstery. Never fully restored but always serviced and used with care, this Mercedes 600 Pullman is a rare opportunity to purchase an authentic car which has retained its originality. A limousine that forever marked its era with its technical supremacy and its success around the world.
