Description

This 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL, 5500046, was first delivered to Cleveland, OH, via New York, in DB190 graphite gray over 641 dark red leather. By the beginning of 1962 it would change hands to the second owner of over 22 years. Over these two decades, 5500046 would become a familiar Gullwing with the Dearborn Automobile Co and soon to follow, Gullwing Service Co. (d/b/a Paul Russell and Company)

In late 1975, 5500046 would become a three year resident at Dearborn Automobile Co, receiving a full restoration in its then color of DB50 cream white. During this time the original interior was preserved, receiving a re-dye in its original color. A full mechanical restoration to the chassis and drivetrain was completed, including engine valves, seats and springs along with a recalibration of the fuel injection system. Service orders for the restoration, spanning from December of 1975 through October of 1978 are with the car.

After the completion of the restoration on 5500046, the car would see little use, as documented in the mileage, before changing hands to its most recent long-term owner of over 35 years. In 1984, Dearborn Automobile Co. would conduct the transaction between the second owner and the most recent owner.

During previous owners extended ownership, 5500046 would come back to what is now Paul Russell and Company for updates to the interior, such as new carpets, headliner and visors, along with other mechanical work and service. Less than 2,500 miles have been added to the car since it was purchased in 1984. 5500046 currently has just over 41,000 miles, which is believed to be original.

All of the car’s numbers match the original delivery, including wheel dates that are correct for this early of a Gullwing. The current DB50 cream white period correct color shows very well on this 45 year old restoration. The original interior has a lovely patina holding up exceptionally well since the restoration.

The character inherent in an older restoration is something appreciated by sophisticated collectors. 5500046 is an excellent opportunity to acquire a very original, early 1955 Gullwing, with exceptional documentation to support its history.
