The Mercedes-Benz W201, internal designation of the 190 model manufactured between 1982 and 1993, is a four-door, five-seat sedan with front engine and rear-wheel drive.

The 190 was Mercedes-Benz's first compact car.

Designed by Bruno Sacco, head of Mercedes-Benz's styling department between 1975 and 1999, the W201 was presented at the 1982 Paris Motor Show and was manufactured in Bremen and Sindelfingen in Germany. The total production of the W201 was 1,879,629 units.

The W201 introduced a 5-link rear suspension that was later used in the C and E classes, front and rear stabilizer bars, airbags, ABS brakes and seat belt pretensioners. Its design resorted to the extensive use of high strength light steel that allowed the 190 to withstand an impact against a concrete barrier 60 km / h without serious injury to passengers or deformation of the passenger compartment.

The 190 is considered by many to be the best-designed and toughest Mercedes in the modern era.
