During the 1920s Mercedes-Benz concentrated production on its exotic, six cylinder machines such as the SS/SSK models together with more mundane side valve, six cylinder models for the mass market. These were followed in 1930 by the Type 170 which, with a 1.7 litre four cylinder engine, was the smallest Mercedes-Benz model yet made; it also marked a Mercedes first in having all round independent suspension. In 1936 the 170 was superceded by the new 170V with tubular backbone chassis, which was to become the company‘s best selling pre-war model, continuing on sale until 1953, variations on the chassis including military applications such as the Kubelwagen and three seater cabriolet models.
