Following the success of Maserati’s 3500 and Sebring models, the Modenese marque approached Carrozzeria Frua to produce a more cutting-edge design to sit upon the updated AM109 chassis, and the resulting model was dubbed the Mistral, the last Maserati to be fitted with the company’s competition-inspired long stroke six-cylinder engine. Despite Maserati’s focus shifting to road car production, the model was produced in relatively limited numbers; only 383 examples were completed in this specification.

According to records provided by Maserati, this relatively early Mistral 3.7 Coupé was originally destined for its native Italy. Produced in May of 1965, it was originally finished in Nero with a Senape leather interior and shipped to Milan where it was delivered to its first owner, a Dr. Sanpietro. Three years later in May of 1968, the car was exported to Sweden. The car remained in Sweden, passing through a long chain of Swedish owners, before being acquired by Mr. J. Molin, of Jakobstad, Finland in October of 1993. The car was subsequently exported to Finland and remained with Molin until being acquired by the current owner in 1999.

Remaining in Finland ever since, the Mistral is reported to be in excellent condition, having recently been repainted in its original black, and the interior was retrimmed black to match. The car presents well, fitted with Borrani wire wheels, it would be an excellent alternative to its period competitors from Jaguar and Aston Martin, including the Series I E-Type and DB4.
