At the beginning of the 1950s, Maserati was still producing cars on a very small scale. The Italian brand built high performance sports-cars which were a little too demanding for the wealthy clientele just starting to appear after the war. They were actually looking for models which kept the same allure and were very fast, but which had improved levels of comfort and security. The task of developing such a car was given to Giulio Alfieri, the brilliant engineer who joined Maserati in 1953. Four years later, the Maserati stand at the Geneva show displayed the stunning prototype of the 3500GT, with a body designed by Touring.
In 1963, following the Sebring presented the year before, Maserati revealed the car that unequivocally replace the 3500GT: the Mistral elegantly designed by Frua. A curved rear window serving as a tailgate was cleverly and discreetly incorporated into the flowing shape of the car, an original concept at the time. Available in 3,7 and 4-litres with just 37 examples of the 4-litre produced.
The Spider is rare as only 125 cars were produced in total out of which reputedly only the 7 first cars were fitted with the 3500 engine, one of which is the car we have in today's sale.
Delivered by Auto-König in Munich in a special order red with a white leather interior in 1965 and sold to its first owner the same year. It was returned to the factory in May 1966 by the same German owner for its first big service and after that returned again back to Germany.
Eventually the car found its way to the USA where it was restored. Probably in the 80s and re-painted in its original color. The car was imported from the US to Sweden in the late 1980s and was acquired by its second Swedish owner in the early 90s with who it has remained until late 2014.
The car has been re-commissioned and given a full service. Ready to be used at classic rallies or for summer drives along the Cote d´Azur's roads, this classic Maserati with its very good presentation and its rarity is surely a bona fide investment for the future as well as an immensely enjoyable vehicle to drive.
