There is no need to revisit the wrath of Ferruccio Lamborghini, and his dissatisfaction with the various Ferrari he had owned. Feeling unwelcome at Maranello, he founded his own marque in 1963, giving it the emblem of a raging bull: the prancing horse had better beware. The initial creation, the 350 GT, was superb, but it was the arrival of the Miura in 1966 that really caused a stir. The car sported a stunning, streamlined body designed by Marcello Gandini, newly promoted head of design at Bertone, while retaining the personality of a genuine race car. The build of the car was also innovative: around the central cell were sections hinged front and rear like a competition car. Moreover, the mid-rear position of its outstanding 3.9-litre V12 engine provided the car with excellent weight distribution. With 350 bhp and weighing a ton, the acceleration was incredible. The top speed of 280 km/h made it the quickest production car in the world. Launched in 1968, the new Miura S was an evolution of the previous version and incorporated a number of differences. The level of comfort and equipment was improved, but importantly, so was the car's performance: 370 bhp, a higher top speed and, a first on a road-registered car, 0 to 100 km/h in the 5 second bracket!

The Lamborghini on offer left the Santa Agata factory on 22 September 1969 equipped with air conditioning, ventilated brakes and reinforced front wishbones. It was painted " Verde Miura " with a black imitation leather interior, and was delivered new to a certain Signore Marinese in Italy. It retains the original interior today, but has been repainted " Rubino Rosso " burgundy. The current owner, a Parisian collector passionate about Italian sportscars, bought the car in 1980 from Monsieur Eclaron, who owned a garage in Haute-Marne. It had done 28 000 km from new and was sold with a rebuilt spare engine on a palette. The current owner only registered the car in his name in 1992, having driven it on the garage's trade plates between 1980 and 1992. In the mid-1980s he broke the engine, which was the original one, with the number 30418, and he replaced it with the spare engine provided, stamped " CO 345". Although the number doesn't correspond to a Miura number, this is an engine belonging to this model. It must be stressed that at that time, no-one placed any importance on whether a car was powered by its original engine !

The objective was to drive ! Since buying the car, the owner tells us that he has carried out regular, routine maintenance, that has included changing the clutch, the master cylinder, shock absorbers, brakes and brake discs " a few years ago ". Also, the Miura has electronic ignition, and has been adapted so that if the carburettors clog, the pumped fuel returns to the fuel tank. This is a common problem on this model, and this adaptation reduces the risk of fire. This is a car that has never really been restored, that bares a few signs of surface corrosion at the bottom of the rear bootlid, some dints on the doors, a few scratches and light knocks. Its owner, some 70 years young, " un ancien " , as we respectfully call someone who has lived through the great motoring era, who has looked after his car himself with the sole aim of keeping the beast running properly, said to me in the Parisian 'Jean Gabin' accent: " The Miura drives like a toy, sat behind the wheel, it is like being wrapped in velvet, and when the 12 boys (cylinders you understand) get going, it really takes off ". Starting like clockwork, with impeccable oil pressure and after a few kilometres, oil temperature too, it takes to the road happily, navigating the bends with great dexterity. This well-balanced Miura has excellent road-handling. The owner drives it like a bike and knows it inside out. " Last week," he adds, " I had a meeting in Bordeaux, and took the car. It went there and back without blinking ! " In short, the odometer records almost 54 000 km today and the car has always been driven and never restored. It is in its original state. There are numbers hidden on all the doors. The rear bootlid has the number 525 with the fins stamped 1 to 6 in order of mounting. The two door handles are stamped with the number 383. On the bonnet, it is impossible to make out the number because of the paint.
This Miura S has the bonus of having been maintained by one of the first great enthusiasts. It is one of the last Miura S examples in the hands of the same owner for over 35 years. It has the charm of originality, and of a life lived.
