Description

Model History

Lagonda is a British luxury car brand established in 1906. The company was started by Mr. Wilbur Gunn who became a British national in 1891 and worked as a speedboat and motorcycle engineer in Saines. The succes of the motorbikes encouraged Mr. Gunn to go into sports car production in the 1920s and in 1935 Lagonda won the 24 hours of Le Mans.

In 1927 the Speed model was announced: the Lagonda 2-litre Speed Model was a British production with a very fine performance. Unique features in design are to be found in the engine and chassis. The four-cylinder power unit has overhead valves operated by two overhead camshafts, so placed that the cilinder head may be removed without interfering the valve timing.

The body was a roomy four-seater with a excellent seating position with a well-raked steering wheel. Other outstanding features in the layout include the mounting of the magneto at the front of the cylinder block. In 1929 the chassis was further modified and is known as the low-chassis version. The radiator was also altered as the dynamo was moved to the front of the crankshaft. A supercharged version was announced in 1930.

In 1947, Lagonda was sold to David Brown and paired up with Aston Martin.

This example

We are happy to offer this very original Lagonda 2-Litre Low-chassis Speed Model Open Tourer on behalf of its owner. Finished in black with red upholstery and a black canvas hood and first registered on 24 April 1931. In 1961 Mr. Peter White of Sible Hedingham, Essex, England bought the car from Arthur Archer & Sons of Dunmow, Essex. Mr. White regularly used and enjoyed his car and appears to have been well maintained which is reflected in its overall very original condition.

This unique Lagonda has only had three owners from new, one for over 55 years. Partly restored in the 1960s and remains in very original condition. The current Dutch owner acquired the car in October 2015.

A rare opportunity to acquire a cherished and highly desirable Open Tourer with excellent provenance. Comes with a wheel hamer, jack and tonneau cover and more importantly the old registration book and FIVA papers. FIVA class A2.
