Description

Registration number: JE-89-63

There must have been quite something stirring in West Bromwich, near Birmingham, England: Brothers Alan and Richard Jensen are busy creating their new big GT. A car with a steel body and an American V8 was the intended successor to the C-V8. On this occasion the brothers turned their sights on Italy for the design. Carrozzeria Touring are given the design brief for the big 4-seater coupé with the first cars built in Italy. At Touring? Don’t be silly, that would be too much of a logical thing. No, the first models are built by Vignale before the whole production was shipped over to West Bromwich.

The Jensen Interceptor combines British character and coach-building quality with Italian charm and a reliable American Chrysler V8. Jensen aimed its very quick model at clients who were willing to shell out a considerable amount for performance and exclusivity. Did you know that an Interceptor III, as shown here, was 60% more expensive than a Jaguar E-Type Series III Roadster!

Our Interceptor was built in the summer of 1973 before being shipped over to its first owner in the States. After a long life clad in a cooper-brown exterior and a light brown upholstery it had become time for the car to be fully restored. The brown paintwork was exchanged for a stunning looking “Electric Blue” metallic finish. This has accentuated the car’s fine qualities. What brilliant performance this car possesses! With its 7.2 litre V8 the Interceptor makes huge strides. The 7.2 litre V8 originally produced 330 hp which was screwed back to 280 hp because of American emission laws. The 50 lost horses were restored as the accompanying paperwork shows.

As the car has been totally restored its bodywork is in peak shape. The paint finish is fine, all seams and shutlines are correct and being completely restored means everything in and out of sight has either been overhauled, restored or replaced. Photos of the restoration are present as is over an inch thick wad of invoices in evidence of the mechanical and interior work carried out in full.

The interior has been tastefully executed in beige leather with black piping. The leather is very tidy and the Moto-Lita steering wheel is a lovely eye-catcher. The wood of the steering wheel is replicated in the centre console and tunnel. Straight ahead of you are two large gauges accompanied by a number of smaller family members and air-inlets on the right affording your passenger something to admire too. Everything works and everything looks great.

This Jensen drives brilliantly. With its juicy V8 and automatic Torqueflite transmission, excellent road holding and fine handling all chiming together in harmony it is a gem. The Jensen may well be big and weighty at 1,600 kg, it still manages to feel agile and fleet of foot. The mechanicals are up to spec and everything feels and works as you would expect form a car in this exclusive segment. There is such pleasure to be derived when traveling around in this special vehicle.

The car is accompanied by a substantial thick document file containing invoices, technical information, magazines, restoration photos as well as old e-mail exchanges.
This is a full provenance Jensen, completely ready to be enjoyed. This luxury GT ticks all the boxes on your search for the perfect Interceptor!
