If history has learnt us anything then it must be the fact Max Hoffman has an eye for a beautiful car. He convinced Mercedes-Benz in bringing the 300SL Gullwing to the American market, encouraged Porsche to develop the 365 Speedster and BMW to develop its 503. Hoffman ordered this car to stock and had sold it within four days. This Jaguar XK120 DHC was New York supplied from new in 1953. The car has a gorgeous Battleship Grey finish matched to a red leather interior trim. The XK120 DHC is the rarest Jaguar XK 120 version. DHC stands for Drop Head Coupé and is the version preferred by people who want a sporty car without sacrificing a luxurious interior. If this particular car seems familiar it could be that you have seen it in the past at Pebble Beach. This car has the very same finish as the first example that rolled off the line at Jaguar with Clark Gable’s name attached to it.

This example has been fully restored and is a picture of health. The high quality of this restoration is still very much evident. The car has a perfectly neat black hood with a tonneau cover available for the days that you want to drive around with the top fully down. The nice and thin panelwork is correctly aligned. The car has steel rims with the correct hubcaps. The rear sports the rare “spats” that give the impression of speed even when the car is standing still. The Battleship Grey looks very smart with only minor signs of use.

The interior has red leather upholstery and red carpets. The wonderful walnut wooden dashboard inlay is in great shape. The splendid looking instruments and controls are all in very good condition. The car radiates a delicious atmosphere with the interior contrasting wonderfully with the grey paintwork.

The XK120 has a 3.54-litre straight-six attached to a manual 4-speed gearbox. The engine develops 160 Ps allowing this Jaguar to keep pace with modern traffic with ease. Both transmission, as well as the engine, were fully reconditioned. The engine runs perfectly and the gearbox action is precise. The Jaguar XK120 also has independent front suspension and rear leaf springs, lending a modern feel to the road handling. Thanks to the high quality of the restoration you need to do nothing other than get behind the wheel and experience the joy of driving this Jaguar. When a car has been garaged during the winter months it is a bonus that after nearly seventy years it is still a breathtaking sight.
