First known as the XJ-S; the replacement for the vaunted E-Type was unveiled to the world in September 1975. It was initiated when Sir William Lyons was chairman and designer Malcolm Sayer had not yet succumbed to an early passing at age 53; it would be the final Jaguar model overseen by these two legends of the marque.
The XJS was a member of a very exclusive club; it was initially underdeveloped, unfashionable and out of favor with the press. The platform would go on to flourish and, over a 21 year production run with 115,413 total cars, become one of the most successful models to ever wear the Jaguar badge.
Nineteen ninety-one would see the final major cosmetic update to the XJS with what is known as the facelift model launched as a 1992 model. Little is changed mechanically, but the big news in the United States was the availability of the AJ6 engine. The inline six-cylinder was now enlarged to 4.0-litre (with 220-hp and now fuel-injected) and mated to a four speed automatic. Outside, the slightly suppler lines were only the tip of the iceberg as the bodyshell was now build from far fewer panels than the earlier version with additional rust-proofing treatment. While the front end was for the most part unchanged, it is the rear which underwent the most changes with revised quarter windows, a new rear window and all new taillights. Equipped with four-wheel disc brakes, the rears were now mounted in a more traditional outboard position. New for 1993 was color-keyed bumpers and walnut veneers were on the dash fascia, door trim and center console. The reengineered “facelift” cars were built from 1992 through 1996, and during this period approximately 27,500 XJS models were built, of which around 8,800 coupes and an additional 18,570 convertibles rolled off the line.
Finished in Signal Red with a tan soft-top, plus leather-faced Barley (tan) seats and interior; this 1993 Jaguar XJS is a well preserved, unrestored one owner example with only 4,040 actual miles registered on the odometer. The car is accompanied by its original window sticker and from this document you can see that it is factory equipped with many comfort and convenience features. The car was initially sold at Shelton Imports, Inc. on Tamiami Trail North in beautiful Naples, Florida. Among the many appointments on this respected grand tourer is air conditioning, cruise control, full analog instrumentation, heated rear window, leather-wrapped steering wheel with airbag, AM/FM/cassette, remote locks, heated mirrors; power heated seats, four-wheel disc brakes, top and windows. The sale includes the original window sticker that shows that when new, the off the lot price was $57,710. Other items remaining with the Jaguar Are the owner’s manual, spare set of keys, top boot, jack and spare tire.
