Description

Chassis No. SAJJEAEX8AX220730

Engine No. 6A10140SB

Employing valuable lessons learned from Jaguar's highly successful Group C program - and demonstrating discernible lineage from the earlier C-, D- and E-type models - production of the XJ220 commenced in 1992; its race-derived, 542 horsepower 3.5-liter V6 turbo engine affording it a top speed of some 212 mph.

One of only about 282 examples built, chassis number 2270730 was finished in the classic color combination of Silverstone Green with Sand leather interior, and was delivered to first owner John Elen of Maasmechlen, Belgium on 20 August 1993. Mr. Elen appears to have kept the car for around 10 years; ultimately the XJ220 was imported to the US under Show & Display regulations and by 2004 had joined the collection of Gary Groves of Redlands, California.

Having covered some 5,300 kilometers by this stage, Mr. Groves instructed Viking Motorsports of Costa Mesa, California to carry out a comprehensive engine top end overhaul in January 2004 at a cost of almost $10,000; the principal work performed being the replacement of both head gaskets, cam belt, alternator belt, and exhaust and cam cover gaskets. Further work carried out subsequently included a fuel injection system overhaul in January 2010, the total cost of which amounted to a further $3,893. It is understood that Mr. Groves housed the car in a museum for much of his time as custodian, with only minimal mileage accruing as a result.

In May 2011, the car joined the Fleischman Collection, of which it has remained part ever since. During its time with the Fleischmans, its use has remained similarly modest, although "730" has been fastidiously looked after and sympathetically garaged throughout. Indeed, in June 2016, the car was shipped to preeminent XJ220 specialists Don Law Racing of Newcastle-under-Lyme, UK for a comprehensive overhaul and 24-month service.

Over the course of the next six months, the engine and transmission were removed from the car, with all requisite belts, seals, gaskets, and filters replaced. In addition, the fuel system was entirely overhauled with new fuel pumps and hoses, while the ignition system was reconditioned with new spark plug wires and a new coil. All four damper units were also rebuilt, and the braking system upgraded to incorporate floating front discs, slotted rear discs, an upgraded master cylinder and twin servos; the total cost of all work completed totalling £27,920. During the course of a subsequent road test, it was discovered that the car's ECU was faulty, so a new Jaguar Sport unit was procured, re-mapped and re-fitted to the car; the cost of this being a further £9,226. Finally, a set of new Bridgestone tires were acquired, at an additional cost of some £4,160.

Retaining its original numbers matching engine and color scheme, an odometer reading of under 5,900 kilometers from new (of which less than 500 have been incurred since its last, exacting service), and accompanied by its factory manuals, keys, and tool kit, "730" remains among the most original and well provenanced of all XJ220s. Such correctness, allied to the model's sublime looks, staggering performance and illustrious heritage, renders the car a highly attractive proposition for any aspiring supercar owner; not to mention one guaranteed to turn heads for the next three decades, as it has for the last.
