Introduced in 1959, the Mark 2 was described at the time as the fastest production saloon in the world. It was developed from the Mark 1, which was Jaguar’s first monocoque saloon. The Mark 2 successfully updated its already attractive styling, which was both elegant and sporting. The car was well balanced and far sportier than its stylish and luxurious appearance suggested. The Jaguar Mark 2 was offered with three different engines, of 2.4, 3.4 and 3.8 litres, and with a choice of transmissions: manual – with or without overdrive – and automatic, destined above all for the United States. The model stood out for the development of some significant technical innovations. It was the company’s first car to feature unitary body construction, independent rear suspension and disc brakes all round. The rear track was wider than on the Mark 1, improving the car’s roadholding. The Mark 2 also arrived just as the motorway network was coming into use, making it possible to “cruise” in great comfort at more than 100mph. Its comfortable interior and luxurious finish made it a prestigious and sumptuous way to travel. When the sales of the Mark II tailed off in 1967, Jaguar extended the model’s life by re-badging it as the 240 and 340, and these provided a stopgap until the XJ6 was introduced.
The model which we are offering for sale is a Jaguar Mark 2 240 first registered on 1 October 1968. Fully restored some ten years ago, the car was repainted in Old English White; its chrome wire wheels shine brightly, while the Ambla upholstery and carpets were completely changed. Since this restoration of its appearance, the Jaguar has undergone a major mechanical overhaul, from 2017 to 2019. The compressions were tested (with no variances greater than 0.5), the water pump checked and the valves adjusted; the radiator was removed and treated, the ignition system completely replaced and the wiring loom, running gear and braking system all attended to. Nothing was left to chance to ensure that the car would be ready to take to the road in all conditions. Indeed, during our test, we found the car drove perfectly. Thanks to the rebuild and recent tuning of the carburettors, the 6-cylinder engine runs very smoothly and picks up revs well. With just 159 cars delivered by the French importer Royal Elysées, the 240 has become a rare yet highly affordable model which offers unparalleled driving pleasure for the price.

This car will be sold during an auction sale organized by AGUTTES Auction House.
It will take place in Paris, at the Espace Champerret, France, on March the 17th, 2019.
