The Escort Twin Cam was produced by Ford to compete in rally competitions and European Saloon Car championships in 1970, 71 and 72. They also won the East African Safari, the RAC rally and the European Rally Championships at the same time. They also famously won the inaugural London to Mexico City Rally in 1970, placing 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 8th.
The specifications for the Escort Twin Cam: Lotus designed "hemi" engine, 1560cc @ 115 BHP @ 6,000 RPM. 116 lb/ft torque @ 4,500 RPM. 9.5:1 comp. ratio. Twin overhead camshafts. Twin Weber 40 DCOE Weber carbs, 4 speed close-ration gearbox. Rack-and-pinion steering. 2200 lbs approximate total production of less than 1300 cars.
The Escort Twin Cam was developed by Ford Competitions Department at Boreham, England. Around 20 prototype/pre-production cars were assembled there in the winter of 1967/68 before production commenced at the Halewood Plant early in 1968. Production continued there until 1971. As far as is known, the Halewood-built Twin Cams produced were all RHD. A batch of 50 LHD Twin Cams were built by Ford of Germany. Several hundred Twin Cams were also assembled by Ford Australia, with some differences to UK cars, including all body color options. The Twin Cam was not an Advance Vehicle Operation (AVO) model but is accepted as the forerunner of the AVO Escort.
The majority of the Halewood-manufactured Twin Cams were only available in Ernime White. Toward the end of production two color options were offered on special order, Maize Yellow and Sunset Red. There are three known Sunset Twin Cams.
Some highlights of Ian Sutcliffe's inspection report will follow. Mr. Ian Sutcliffe has been involved with AVO cars for 30+ years and has owned several Escort Twin Cams and AVO Escorts. For the past 14 years he has sat on the committee of the Ford AVO Owner's Club as the Twin Cam Registrar.
As far is known, BBATLL65191 is one of three Twin Cams supplied to Ford of Portugal, the others being white and Maize Yellow, both of which were rallied. All three cars were converted to LHD by Ford of Portugal when they were imported.
This car, BBATLL65191, is without a doubt a factory-produced, original Escort Twin Cam which displays both its original chassis and body plates as well as the chassis No. stamped in the RHS suspension top reinforcing plate. It can be seen, where the holes in the RHS bulkhead top (where they brake/clutch fluid pipes and throttle cable passed through) have been welded up during the conversion to LHD. The reinforcing plated for the pedal box remains on the RHS lower bulkhead. The car retains RHD windscreen wipers but the whole part of the metal dash panel has been changed for the LHD version.
The car has had one repaint in Sunset Red, but is an incredibly original, unrestored example.
The car competed in historic rallies in France, Spain and Portugal from 2007-2015. These events include the 2013 Rally Costa Brava Historic and the 2014 Bordeaux Sud-Ouest Classic.

This Twin Cam Escort has some service receipts including engine rebuild from Brett Sims MotorSport in Hampton, UK, owner's manual and the original factory seats. The car has been driven a couple thousand miles under my ownership without an issue.
