Built on the underpinnings of the Fiat Nuova 1100, so named because it was an all-new, unibody replacement for the aging 1100E, this 1953 Fiat 1100 Cabriolet with bodywork by Carrozzeria Allemano of Turin elevates an already well-received design by Giovanni Michelotti. While the bold grille treatment is undoubtedly one of its most eye-catching elements, the Allemano Cabriolet is—from “sharknose” to tail—a masterful design inside and out.

This car, number 019195, is one of four cabriolets believed to have been built in this style, of which two are known to survive. The subject of a high-quality restoration (managed by automotive historian Donald Osborne) which saw it returned to its original colors and configuration, the quality of the work performed truly must be seen to be fully appreciated. The exterior, finished in blue, features a subtle metallic effect. The interior is trimmed in red vinyl—the appropriate material choice for this chassis—and its color is complimented by the dashboard, intricate steering wheel, and even the translucent red sun visors.

When not deployed, the car’s ivory cloth convertible top stows neatly beneath a top boot coordinated with the interior color. Fit and finish of doors, panels, and the single-piece front and rear bumpers is exacting. Pirelli whitewalls on steel wheels with chrome trim and Fiat hubcaps complete the vintage, as-built appearance.

Mechanical components, too, are restored to a very high level both cosmetically and functionally. The car’s 1,089-cc inline-four engine, paired with a four-speed manual transmission, is topped with a finned aluminum valve cover. Rich, detailed finishes such as the engine-turned aluminum firewall panel and period-appropriate hardware used throughout.

Offering a tremendous amount of distinctive Italian style in a delightful compact package, this rare 1953 Fiat 1100 Cabriolet by Allemano is suitable for either show or touring.
