Having finally responded to the Lamborghini Miura with the introduction of the mid-engined Berlinetta Boxer, Ferrari continued to develop this model. The first 365 GT4 BB went on sale in 1973 and in 1976 it evolved into the 512 BB. The name corresponded to the new numbering system chosen by Ferrari : instead of indicating the engine size, as with the 365, it was made up of the initial number of the cylinder size followed by the number of cylinders. Here it was 5-litres and 12 cylinders, and retained the flat engine derived from competition, positioned above the gearbox. In this version, the engine was still supplied by four triple-bodied Weber carburettors, but the larger engine size increased the torque, improving the driveability of the car. Like its predecessor, it was capable of a top speed of 300 km/h, something reserved for a small number of elite cars at that time. Moreover, it had superior handling and stability at high speeds that couldn't be matched by the Lamborghini Miura. Some 929 examples of this model were built, more than the 365 GT4, but less than the 512 injection model. It was the very last carburretor-fed model to be produced by Ferrari.
This Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer was sold new to Mr Egger, through the intermediary of Auto Dino AG, the dealer based in Zurich. Living in Switzerland and the United States, Mr Egger finally settled in America. At the end of 1979 he decided to export his car, as recorded in the period customs documentation, included in the file. The service book shows that the car was subsequently maintained by Polo Motors Inc., in Kansas. Mr Egger returned to Switzerland ten years later, and the car followed on 30 May 1989. At this time the mileage had passed 50,000km.
Our collector acquired the car a little while later, in the 1990s. He has driven it very little, but has ensured that it has been started and serviced regularly. Today the odometer stands at 72 530 km and the car is presented in nice original condition. Liveried in red with the characteristic lower body in black, the interior is well preserved with black-striped beige leather seats in used condition. It comes with owner's manual, service book, Ferrari agents' book, jack and tool case fastened in the front compartment.
As the car hasn't been driven for some time, a service will be required to allow full appreciation of the outstanding performance of this first mid-engined road-going Ferrari. In rare original condition, carefully maintained and in the same ownership for the last twenty years, this example of one of the fastest road-going Ferrari offers undeniable appeal.
