Ferrari’s first step at building a production 12-cylinder mid-engined GT car was with the introduction of his flat-twelve Berlinetta Boxer, a prototype of which was shown at the 1973 Turin show and which became a catalogue model by the time of the Paris Salon later that same year.

Packaged with overall styling by Dr. Angelo Bellei, the new car had clamshell front and rear openings at either end with a snug two-seat cockpit set in between; power was derived from Ferrari’s trusty 4.4 liter wet sump engine, conventionally aligned and under which was mated the 5-speed gearbox. Delivering 344bhp at 7,000rpm the performance was ample for all drivers. Just 387 of the model were made before production stopped.

This example was delivered new in 1974 to Switzerland with Rosso Corsa red paintwork and tan leather interior. At some time it was acquired by a respected Long Island, New York collector-businessman and during his ownership, it had a major engine out mechanical refresh, during which time it was upgraded with electronic ignition and ANSA tip exhausts were fitted. He then sold it, the new owner then selling it on again before subsequently re-purchasing it!

Being a European delivered car, as they were not approved for the USA in period, the odometer reads in km/h and now records 30,371 kilometers travelled.

Suitably rare, they are enormously eye-catching even today and are a milestone in Ferrari road car history for being the first of the company’s mid-engined flat-12 derivatives built.
