Description

The 246 GTS presented here is a unique example of the most evolved Dino series, the Tipo E. A Ferrari of particular distinction, chassis 08512 is one of the extremely rare, factory-built “Chairs and Flares” models, so called because of their attractive Daytona seats, dramatically flared wheel arches, and wide Campagnolo cast-alloy wheels. In total, fewer than 300 Dinos were ever equipped with both chairs and flares.

According to the research of model historian Matthias Bartz, this 246 GTS was originally finished in Verde Pino Metallizzato (Metallic Pine Green), a particularly attractive dark green finish specified on just 35 Dinos of all types. As was the case with most “Chairs and Flares” Spiders, this car was generously equipped with optional Borletti air-conditioning, a radio, and electric windows. Completed on June 26, 1974, 08512 is among the very last Dinos built, with only three examples produced subsequently – all GTS models delivered to North America.

The green Dino spider was distributed through Chinetti-Garthwaite Imports Inc. and, as recorded in the original warranty book, sold to its first owner, Dr. Thomas Flatley of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, on April 16, 1975. Dr. Flatley retained the Dino until 1977, when it was sold in pristine condition to well-known collector Brian Brunkhorst. Mr. Brunkhorst kept the 246 GTS for a few years and then sold it to fellow Ferrari enthusiast Richard Gent of Ohio to make room for a recently acquired Daytona Spider. Mr. Gent and two other Ohio-based collectors served as the Dino’s custodians through 2008, when it was sold to Bruce Trenery, owner of Fantasy Junction in Emeryville, California.

Mr. Trenery, who admired this car’s exceptional originality and rare color scheme, retained the Ferrari in his personal collection for many years before selling it to a longtime customer in 2018. During Mr. Trenery’s ownership, 08512 was driven on rare occasions, though it benefited from regular maintenance, including a service by the respected Patrick Ottis Co. in Berkeley, California. Records detailing this service work, as well as other more recent attention carried out, are included in the car’s file.

Offered today from a significant private collection, this rare and desirable Chairs and Flares 246 GTS presents in outstanding, unrestored condition. The odometer displayed just 27,500 miles at the time of cataloguing. The consignor reports the car remains in well-preserved original order, including its interior and exterior finishes. Offered with the sale of this exceptional Dino is the original tool roll, jack kit, protective seat covers, and leather handbook folio containing the correct owner’s manual, parts catalogue, sales and service directory, consumer information pamphlet, and stamped warranty and service book. For the collector who demands only the very best, we encourage serious consideration of this superb Dino.
