This must be one of the most elegant ways a car manufacturer could test new technology. We think so in any case. This Citroën Traction Avant 15/6 H was used to test out the new hydro-pneumatic suspension for the awaited DS. Of course only the top of the range model, 15/6 H, was selected for this purpose with H denoting hydro-pneumatic. This is how as early as 1954 you could own a Citroën with automatically adjusting suspension. Unheard of at the time!
The Traction Avant in normal guise was already a very advanced motor as well as a resounding sales success for Citroën. It is no exaggeration the brand featuring the double “Chevron” has created a top-class car only succeeded by the even more revolutionary DS. Sadly we have to note that since then Citroën have never been able to replicate that feat. Not that it really matters as there is an enormous group of dedicated enthusiasts that show a great fondness for this model, keeping it going. This example is no different. The wonderful monocoque bodywork remains and presents in great shape. The doors close perfectly and the mudguards align properly. When the car was restored the paintwork was naturally also taken care of at the same time. The paintwork in general is bar a few blemishes neat.
The inside of the car has been reupholstered in brown velvet and blue carpets. The dashboard has been colour-coded and all gauges and switching gear look great and are in correct working order. The headlining and typical hand-holds are all in situ.
Whilst the Traction Avant’s looks are quite fetching, this car is mainly all about the technology it houses. That wonderful straight-six and the hydro-pneumatic suspension are mechanically speaking a true “Tour du Force”! This exactly reflects the ideas formed by the visionary Andre Citroën. The engine produces 77 Ps and has a 3-speed manual gearbox. Both engine and hydro-pneumatic system are in good order as is the precisely functioning transmission. Oh what a joy it is to drive around in this car. The level of comfort is unsurpassed, beating many a modern car. Why the Traction Avant 15/6H was known as “The queen of the road” becomes glaringly obvious after experiencing even a short ride. We must warn you, you may become addicted to this infinite amount of comfort. If you observe a bump in the road, you will wonder were it has disappeared to, every irregularity be it large or small gets smooth out.
This is not just a very stylish mode of transport but an incredible piece of comfortable French top-class technology. This car truly belongs in anyones serious Citroën collection.
