One of the most visible honors in all of motorsports is to serve as the Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500. No car has held the position more often than America's Sports Car, the Chevrolet Corvette, which has set the pace at the 500-mile race in Indianapolis no fewer than nineteen times since 1978. Most years, Chevrolet has recognized the selection by making available to the public a limited-production replica, finished in identical colors and trim to the Pace Car.

For 1998 the package included finish in Radar Blue with a yellow and black leather interior and bright yellow wheels, as well as a yellow graphics package with a checkered flag motif. Ordering the Indy colors also equipped one's car with the Delco electronically tuned AM/FM radio with automatic tone control and CD player, Bose speaker system, electronic dual-zone heating and air conditioning, dual-power leather adjustable sport bucket seats with memory, and special floor mats. These were the first Corvettes equipped with the new Active Handling system, which utilizes a yaw sensor, steering angle sensor, lateral accelerometer, and other advanced features to enhance handling and help avoid accidents.

Only 1,163 of the Pace Car Corvette replicas were produced, sold to the public by selected Chevrolet dealers.

Mr. Taylor acquired his car from Gary Enck's Car Store, the GM dealer in Cooperstown, New York, in 2006, with 1,058 miles; documentation in the file notes a prior owner as Griffin W. Gillette of Oneonta. Since then it has been driven occasionally and today remains in good condition with 1,869 miles recorded at the time of cataloging. It is equipped with the 5.7-litre V-8, six-speed manual transmission, Active Handling System, Memory Package, dual power sport seats, and Bose Sound with CD player. The car is accompanied by a small file including purchase documentation, a partial window sticker, build information, and a clean CARFAX report, and is a fine example of its type.
