Description

Chassis No. 20967W281951

Body No. WR 9113

It is easy to forget that at the time of its introduction, the Chevrolet Corvair was genuinely one of the most groundbreaking, innovative American automobiles ever produced. A compact-sized automobile with attractive styling inspired by the latest imports, it featured a rear-mounted, air-cooled flat six-cylinder engine – the only such configuration ever in an American production car.

The Corvair was widely acclaimed by the automotive press and was extremely popular with the public, especially following the 1962 introduction of the very quick and sporty Monza Spyder model with a turbocharged 150-horsepower engine, one of the first of its kind. The Monza Spyder could be had as either a coupe or convertible, both of which were revolutionary as a small, affordable car with good performance – the ancestors of the 'pocket rockets' to come from American and European manufacturers in the following decades.

The Taylor Monza Spyder convertible is equipped with the turbocharged engine and four-speed manual transmission, and is finished in the original color scheme of Roman Red with black vinyl interior, as described on the body tag. Complete with chrome engine trim, white convertible top under a black boot, whitewall tires and hubcaps, and a full spare wheel and tire, it is in remarkably solid condition, to an impressive extent rarely seen on these automobiles. Even the battery box is not rusty! Attractive and very straight throughout, it had recorded 60,459 miles at the time of cataloging, a reading likely original given its very attractive condition.

A turbocharged Corvair is a very entertaining automobile to drive, offering a lot of bang for one's buck – and this one is ideal for a new owner to exercise and enjoy.
