  • A Harley Earl-era highpoint of Cadillac design

The year 1941 saw a huge shift in design at Cadillac under the guidance of Harley Earl, General Motor’s renowned head of design. Styling took a significant leap forward with a complete redesign that clearly separated the new models from the prior generation of Cadillacs. Aesthetically, some consider 1941 the highpoint in Cadillac design—the cars are a visual masterpiece of subtle, flowing curves; headlights were fully integrated into the front fenders, and a wide horizontal grille stretched from side to side. The hood was made front-opening for the first time, and the gas-tank filler was hidden in the left rear taillight, a feature that soon became a Cadillac hallmark. Power in the Series 62 came from a 346 cubic-inch V8 engine. A three-speed, manual transmission with a column-mounted shifter was standard; a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission was optional.

Cadillac produced two convertible body styles in 1941, with the option of either a two-door Convertible Coupe or four-door Convertible Sedan offered as part of the Series 62 line. Both body styles are recognized as Full Classics by the Classic Car Club of America, on account of their limited production numbers. Equipped with a vacuum-powered convertible top, the Convertible Coupe was available only as a Deluxe model, which included rear fender skirts, wheel trim, and other decor items.

In the mid-1980s, RM Auto Restoration refinished this Cadillac Series 62 Deluxe Convertible Coupe in its current elegant combination of cream over red leather with a tan top. The work done nearly 35 years ago has held up superbly, a testament to the superior workmanship of the restoration and mindful stewardship of the respected collection from which this car is offered. Today, additional features on the Cadillac include a driver’s side spotlight and dual sideview mirrors. It rides on period-style, wide whitewall tires installed within the last 12 months and mounted to red painted steel wheels with trim rings and polished covers featuring the Cadillac crest. Color-matched fender skirts give the car a streamlined look.

Refurbished to a high standard and lovingly maintained as part of a respected collection, this Classic Car Club of America Full Classic is a masterpiece of Midcentury American automotive design that can be enjoyed on any number of touring events. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mo22.
