Description

The handsome Skylark offered here from the Peter Klutt Collection is one of just 1,690 produced by Buick to celebrate the GM Division’s 50th anniversary. Marking a sportier new direction for Buick, the Roadmaster-based Skylark was essentially a factory-built custom car with extensive handwork involved; as such, it accurately foreshadowed the personal luxury market that would emerge by the end of the 1950s.

The sole model offered for 1953 without Buick’s trademark ventiports, the Skylark featured headlamps derived from Buick’s XP-300 Motorama show car, slim full-length chrome side molding, fadeaway fenders, lowered seats, and Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels. All standard and optional Roadmaster features were included, except air-conditioning, making the Skylark the best-equipped Buick ever. Priced from $5,000, the Skylark was available starting in January 1953.

Formerly owned by noted Michigan collector John McMullen, this Skylark continues to benefit from a professional body-off-frame restoration completed during his ownership, with care and detailing clearly evident throughout. In mid-2007, it was acquired by Peter Klutt, and from then it was maintained within his highly respected collection and formed a milestone as a member of his Triple Crown grouping of limited-production 1953 GM convertibles. Rare, striking, and cared for by two respected long-term collectors, this 1953 Buick Skylark stands as an important and immensely collectible GM Dream Car.
