The BMW 3 Series E 21 was presented for the first time in an event reserved only for the German BMW dealer network, while two months later, on July 3, the car was presented for the first time to the press, who appreciated its impact. aesthetic, especially in the front.
The presentation to the public took place on 10 September 1975 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. During the period of the German event, the first deliveries of the newborn BMW took place.
The structure of the E21 was designed trying to comply with the most recent safety criteria: the body was therefore of the programmed deformation type and its torsional stiffness was increased by about 18% compared to the value recorded in the 02 Series.
The mechanics of the E21 resumed some of the basics already seen in the 02 Series, but with completely redesigned geometries aimed at increasing ride comfort and making the car more stable in the wet. We therefore find the independent wheel layouts on the two axles: Mac Pherson type front end with coil springs and rubber pads and rear axle with triangular arms, always with coil springs. There were obviously also telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers on the two axles for the whole range, but also standard stabilizer bars on the top versions.
A small novelty concerned the steering, which saw the abandonment of the ball circulation solution, in favor of the rack system.
