Description

As BMW sales climbed throughout the 1960s across Europe, their attention started to focus on motorsport and their desire to create "The Ultimate Driving Machine". The first model to reflect this was the '2002', introduced in 1968 and their high-performance version, the '2002 Tii', quickly followed in 1970 with a more powerful engine giving 120 bhp, a 5-speed gearbox and uprated suspension and brakes. The chassis is that of the two-carburettor '2002 Ti' uprated with stiffer springs, front and rear anti-roll bars, larger front disc brakes, and wider wheels. In the driveline, the 'Tii' has a slightly closer ratio 4-speed gearbox, a stronger clutch, and a longer axle ratio to increase top speed.

Offered here is a lovely BMW 2002 Tii which, according to the original service book, was first registered in December 1972 having been supplied new by BMW Paris. It's a round tail light, non-sunroof example, possibly the rarest and most desirable iteration of the naturally aspirated 2002s. Finished in a lovely shade of Ivory with French Navy Blue seats and grey carpets, the BMW appears to be in superb order and was subject to a substantial overhaul prior to import into the UK from Europe. Documents within the history file list a scope of works including paintwork, new shock absorbers and suspension, brakes, tyres, exhaust, replacement metal where required, engine overhaul, and new carpets with some photographic evidence of work in progress. As such the 2002 Tii fires absolutely on-the-button, sounds healthy and looks great.

It's accompanied by a box file of history including the aforementioned original service book and owners-manual, rare original stereo instruction manual, old European registration documents, the current UK V5C registration papers ready for export or transfer and other related paperwork. Presented to auction from a private collection of landmark classic cars, imported and registered in the United Kingdom, TSX 289K presents a great opportunity to take ownership of a desirable 2002 Tii in great shape and ready to offer another half-century of enjoyable motoring.
