Le cabriolet Volante avait été le modèle le plus vendu de « l'ancienne » famille des V8, si bien que la seule surprise fut que la marque attendît deux ans après l'introduction du coupé Virage pour proposer un équivalent décapotable. La Virage Volante de production fit ses débuts au Salon de Genève de mars 1991, un prototype ayant été exposé au NEC de Birmingham au mois d'octobre précédent. D'un poids un peu supérieur à deux tonnes, la Volante découverte était même un peu plus lourde que le coupé, déjà tout sauf léger. Ce supplément de poids était dû aux nombreux renforts de coque imposé par l'absence de toit et au système compliqué de manœuvre assistée de la capote. Actionnée électriquement, celle-ci était superbement fabriquée et dotée d'une lunette arrière en verre pourvue d'un système de chauffage/désembuage. Mécaniquement, la Volante ne changeait pratiquement pas par rapport à sa version fermée, mais son rapport final un peu plus bas améliorait quelque peu les accélérations sur les intermédiaires. La vitesse de pointe s'en trouvait légèrement réduite, mais toujours excellente à 240 km/h. La transmission automatique était standard sur la Volante, la boîte à trois rapports originale étant remplacée en 1993 par un nouveau type à quatre rapports et deux modes (normal/sport). La boîte manuelle à 5 rapports demeurait disponible en option. « Une très belle réalisation artisanale marque l'ensemble de cette décapotable parmi les plus aristocratiques » écrivit Fast Lane.

Cette Virage Volante fut livrée neuve en Allemagne et immatriculée la première fois au nom d'Andreas Knapp-Voith membre de la bien connue famille collectionneuse d'Aston Martin, suivi par de Dr Rainer Behne (1995) puis H R Pohl Verwaltungs und Beteiligungs GmbH (un fabricant de matériaux de construction de Cologne) en 1996. La voiture sortit d'usine peinte en Cannock Black avec intérieur en cuir vert Spruce à passepoil noir et capote Everflex vert sombre. Le vendeur actuel acheta la Volante à Autohaus Dirk Peters GmbH en août 2007. La documentation disponible comprend des copies de la facture d'achat, de l'historique de la voiture et du contrat de garantie ainsi qu'un Fahrzeugbrief allemand. Longtemps exposée statiquement, la voiture nécessitera une révision avant de reprendre la route.

The Volante convertible had been the big seller of the 'old' V8 line-up, so the only surprise was that it took Aston Martin more than two years from the Virage coupé's introduction to come up with a soft-top equivalent. The production Virage Volante debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1991, a prototype having been displayed at Birmingham's NEC the previous October. Weighing in at over two tons, the open Volante was even heavier than the closed coupé, itself no lightweight, this increase in weight being accounted for by considerable body strengthening to compensate for the absent roof, plus the extra complication of the power-operated convertible hood. Electrically powered, the latter was beautifully made and incorporated a glass rear window complete with heated de-misting elements. Mechanically the Volante remained much the same as its closed cousin, though with slightly lower final drive gearing to aid acceleration through the gears. Top speed was slightly reduced, to a still-outstanding 150mph. Automatic transmission was standard on the Volante, the original three-speeder being superseded in 1993 by a new four-speed dual-mode (normal/sport) unit. The five-speed manual 'box continued to be available as an option. "Beautiful hand-built craftsmanship abounds in this most aristocratic of convertibles," declared Fast Lane.

This Virage Volante was delivered new to Germany and first registered to Andreas Knapp-Voith of the respected Aston Martin collecting family, followed by Dr Rainer Behne (1995) and then H R Pohl Verwaltungs und Beteiligungs GmbH (a Köln-based manufacturer of building materials) in 1996. The car left the factory finished in Cannock Black with black-piped Spruce Green leather interior and dark green Everflex hood. The current vendor purchased the Volante from Autohaus Dirk Peters GmbH in August 2007. Accompanying documentation consists of copies of the purchase invoice, Car Record Card and warranty acceptance, and an original German Fahrzeugbrief. The car has been on static display and will require recommissioning prior to road use.
