According to the documents issued by Alpine, this A110 1600 S Group IV we are offering, left the factory on March 20, 1970, with the serial number 2651. It featured an 807-25 engine and the options "big" gearbox and road exhaust. It was sold new to Jean Saurel, a talented driver from the South of France, and a well-known local personality. In fact, he created the local "Radio bleue" and "Télé bleue", a local TV channel. He won in 1969 the Rallye de l'Ile de Beauté (the national version of the Tour of Corse) in a 1300 S Alpine Group 4.
Jean Saurel was very familiar with the berlinetta and took delivery of his new car directly at the Alpine factory, where the keys were handed over by Jacques Cheinisse. After being registered 300 PN 30, the car participated in numerous rallies in 1970 and 1971, and registered overall victories at the Rallye de la Lozere, the Rallye du Mont-Blanc and the Critérium des Cévennes (see competition history). The car finished sixth in the 1970 edition of Tour Auto.
Saurel then sold the car and lost track of it after 1970. Having kept a spare key in the piggy bank of his daughter, Saurel though did not stop trying to relocate he car, what he finally succeeded in early 2000. The car was in Corsica since 1996, after being registered in the Bouches-du-Rhône (registration 4637 MG 13) since 1986. It was slightly modified and just coming out of a full restoration, as can be seen from the sales advertisement. The body had been replaced and was now equipped with special wings. It no longer had its special gearbox (364-06) but a 353 5 speed version. It still had its optional central tank of 80 liters, its four point roll bar and other special equipment, such as a hydraulic handbrake.
Saurel gave the car to his friend Jean Ratier, a competition car tuner, for a special preparation of the engine, which, according Saurel, is much more efficient than the original, as he said in an interview for the magazine RetroCourse. The car then displayed 4,218 km, against 8,159 today. Jean Saurel even installed electromagnetic switches under the dashboard, and the control system will be given with the file of the car. According to Alpine and Saurel, this car was the only A110 Group 4, which was still in the hands of its original owner. He participated in the Cevennes Classic in 2008, at the Montée Historique de Collias in 2010 and the Rallye Orange-Mont Ventoux in 2011, before passing away in August 2011. The car was re-started in 2015, the brakes were serviced and the carburetors rebuilt and set-up.
