It is 1966 when at the Geneva Autosalon something special is about to happen. A new model anybody has yet lay eyes on. In total contrast to today, there are no internets leaks and no computer mock-ups sent into the world. No, in 1966 there is palpable tension on the floor of the salon when a new car is about to be unveiled. The veil in this case has been lifted from the Alfa Romeo Spider, later to be know as the Duetto, and it makes an immediate stand-out impression. These days it is one of the most recognisable classics. For over nearly 30 years four versions of the model were on sale at Alfa Romeo dealerships.
Our car is a series 2 Spider, the iconic Coda Tronca or short tail. Sportier than the drop-shaped Duetto and later available with more powerful engine choice. The example we have is the top of the range 2000 Veloce. Perhaps 131hp does not sound much in today’s money, but in 1979 it was deemed worthy of a sportscar credentials.
The Bronzo Metallico (Code A.R. 837) with tan interior Spider looks the part. It has not been necessary to restore the car except for a fresh respray and new carpets to replace the sun damaged old ones as it was used sparingly. The combination of the stylish paintwork, brown carpets and light tan upholstery and hood present quite elegantly in our view.

Now, no doubt, appearances matter, but with an Alfa Romeo driving is as important. We are please to report that mechanically speaking this Spider is spot on, thanks to the care its German owner lavished on his car. The last service took place just 47 kilometres ago. The car has been in single ownership for many years until sadly it had become time to part with his Dolce Vita on wheels. Driving this open 2-seater is great and with its hood in good condition it will still be possible to enjoy a tour or two this autumn.
