According to the "Italian Car Registry", the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Zagato Coda Tronca (SZ 2), chassis number AR 10-126.00.183, was delivered by the factory to its Swiss subsidiary Alfa Romeo Svizzera, in Agno, near Lugano (Tessin), on 16 February 1962.
The copy of the customs document, to be supplied with the car, shows that the car cleared customs on 11 April 1962 in Geneva for Pierre Scaramiglia's garage, the Alfa Romeo dealer situated opposite the old Palais des Expositions. A local racing driver, and member of the Geneva écurie La Meute, (there is still a sticker on the car mentioning this), Pierre Scaramiglia entered this SZ 2 during 1963 in numerous national hillclimbs and international events including the Coppa Inter-Europa in Monza and the Spa-Francorchamps 500 Km. An anecdote, the windscreen-wipers on the car still have the lead strips that Scaramilglia added during testing at Spa, to weigh them down and stop them flying off at high speed. As it turned out, it rained heavily that day. This Alfa Romeo was later sold by Pierre Scaramiglia to a person from Geneva who used the car for many years as his daily driver, until the engine failed and was replaced by the engine from a Giulietta 1300. The car was later bought by a collector from Geneva who drove it regularly on the road.
In the autumn of 2002, during the Cologny Grand Prix Retrospective near Geneva, chance would have it that the parking place allocated to the current owner was next to this SZ 2, whose driver indicated he was thinking about selling. Several months later, in June 2003, the deal was done.
A major mechanical overhaul began with the search for a correct engine from series 120, to replace what was in the car. This was finally found, with the number 120.00827, and installed with new spares, by a Swiss Alfa Giulietta specialist. There are invoices totalling approximately 27 000 swiss francs detailing this work. This engine produces over 125 bhp.
The current owner has since participated twice in this car in the Ollon-Villars hillclimb retrospective in Switzerland. The car was invited by Elio Zagato to the coachbuilder's 85th anniversary at Villa Erba, on the shores of Lake Como. It was also invited to Villa d'Este concours in April 2006 and won the "Targa d'Argento - Mention of Honour" in the "low-powered sports car" class. Finally, this Alfa Romeo Sprint Zagato Coda Tronca has a FIVA passport "FSVA 023740 GC 10740" issued on 26 March 2004. The car comes with numerous photographs and documents outlining its history.
The Sprint Zagato is a rare car and the "Coda tronca" even more so, as no more than thirty examples were produced. It is also a highly competitive car, eligible for the best historic events such as the Tour Auto and Le Mans Classic. The car on offer, which has enjoyed a career in competition that has not been excessive, and has been well maintained by its owners, offers a rare opportunity to buy a well preserved and authentic example.
