The Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Sprint was introduced in 1963 to replace the Giulietta Sprint.
Made from the Giulia sedan, it was an elegant Coupé 2+2 designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro in Bertone.
The main aesthetic trait of this first version was the famous front “scalino”, between the bonnet and the grille, which gave the impression of a step. This line was the result of a last-minute afterthought, the project initially involved an air intake that was eliminated shortly before production to limit costs.
Many cars, however, was already in production, for this reason they then decided to produce the car.
The public, on the other hand, showed that they liked this "defect", in fact it gave the car a unique trait, so much so that the project managers decided to leave the design unchanged, even in subsequent production batches.
The first version of 1963 was called Giulia Sprint GT: it was derived from the Giulia TI sedan, powered by a four-cylinder in-line 1570 aluminum engine, with DOHC distribution and four disc brakes. Thanks to the double-body carburetors and the 5-speed gearbox, the car reached a maximum speed of 182 kph, a value that placed the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce at the top of the category and almost on par with sports cars with higher displacement.
