In 1962, propelled by the success of the popular Giulietta and Giulia models, Alfa Romeo introduced the new Tipo 106, the model more commonly known as the 2600. Powered by a robust twin-cam, inline six-cylinder engine, the 2600 was Alfa Romeo’s flagship and offered in a variety of body styles – from the factory-built Berlina sedan to the exotic Sprint Zagato. The 2600 Spider, built by Carrozzeria Touring, was an evolution of the previous 2000 Spider, dramatically improved as a result of its advanced new three-carburetor engine combined with a slick five-speed gearbox and four-wheel disc brakes. In total, Alfa Romeo built just 2,255 examples of the 2600 Spider, making it one of the most rare and sought-after postwar models.

In March 1965, Dr. Walter Leclerc of Portola Valley, California purchased this 2600 Spider from Rezzaghi Motors – San Francisco’s authorized dealer for Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, and Lancia. As recorded on the original Bill of Sale, the Alfa Romeo was originally ordered in the attractive color combination of Graphite Gray with beige upholstery and commanded an impressive $4,525 purchase price.

A proud Alfista, Dr. Leclerc joined the Alfa Romeo Association of Northern California and kept the Spider in his possession until earlier this year, when it was sold to the consignor. Although it appears to have been repainted silver at some point, the 2600 still retains its original beige upholstery, soft top, Carrozzeria Touring body tag, California black plates, and matching-numbers engine – the latter confirmed by the original insurance policy on file. Parked in static storage for approximately three decades, last road registered in 1982, and not currently in running order, the Spider showed just 36,058 miles when catalogued.

Today, this Alfa Romeo is an excellent candidate for restoration, as it appears to be unusually complete and sound, with important mechanical components, trim, and brightwork intact. Significantly, the Spider is offered with its original Bill of Sale from Rezzaghi Motors, original insurance policy, and assorted service records (dating from 1965 through 1975), as well as Dr. Leclerc’s Alfa Romeo Association of Northern California membership card.
