The 2000 Spyder was launched in 1958 using practically the same engine and running gear as the far more ubiquitous Alfa Romeo Berlina Coupe, but with a tuned engine and a spectacular convertible monocoque body designed by the famous coachbuilder, Touring of Milan. The four cylinder engine had the same displacement as the Berlina, but produced 115bhp at 5,700rpm, as opposed to the coupe’s 105bhp at 5,300rpm, courtesy of twin carburettors and an improved compression ratio of 8.5:1, allowing a top speed of 109mph against the Berlina’s 99mph.

Although the car took its styling cues from the Giulietta that had been in production since 1955, its longer wheelbase and 2 2 seating made it made a far more practical car. The louvred side vents and bonnet air intake echo the contemporary Ferrari C
