The car in offer was bought new in Switzerland, by Jean Zoni, who lived in the canton of Vaud. Two other Swiss owners followed, Mr Pescio and Jean Daniel Perrinjaquet. It then passed to the Belgian collector, Ennio Gianaroli, before joining the stock of the famous Belgian business Oldtimer. It was then purchased by its current owner, a French collector via the garage European Cars Legend. In 2014, before it found its way into the hands of our French collector, the car was totally restored in Belgium by Rétro Car Service. The hand-built aluminium coachwork was stripped and repainted in two colours. The underneath of the car and the shut-lines are perfect and the doors close very easily with the lightest of touches. The chrome work has been restored, and now presents the shiniest of reflections. The grille and front and rear lights are all in perfect condition. The leather and linen-style fabric upholstery of front and rear seats is original, with the exception of the back of the front seats. The door linings and armrests are also original, while the mats and roof lining have been renewed. The car is fitted with a full set of new, correct 72-spoke Borrani wheels and Michelin X tyres. It is interesting to note that the Alfa 1900 was used in period by Michelin to develop the X, which remains the best tyre for this car. There is a retractable electric aerial, and the original radio lights up but no longer makes a sound ! The original engine purrs beautifully and has an idling oil pressure when warm of 2kg, which rises to 6 kg at 3000 rpm. The car doesn't smoke or drop oil, makes no abnormal rattles or vibrations and is in the best of health! The five-speed gearbox is smooth when changing up, down, or going into reverse. The car handles beautifully, with no play or noise in the running gear, and the shock absorbers and suspension springs have been replaced. The brakes have recently been refurbished and are evenly balanced, and cooled through air scoops. The rear axle and front wheel bearings have been replaced. All instruments on the dashboard are working and a good quality steel exhaust manifold has been fitted.
The ignition uses Golden Lodge 4-electrode spark plugs. The aluminium scoop that cools the exhaust manifold, the hottest part of the engine, is present and in excellent condition. This sumptuous Alfa 1900 is a perfect demonstration of how, in the 1950s, the Italians excelled at building cars that were luxurious, elegant and could also be competitive in racing. Having good road handling and plenty of power, these coupés were often used in competition. This rare car, one of 854 examples built, of which just 200 or so have survived, is eligible for numerous historic events including Tour Auto and Mille Miglia, celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. It is also eligible for prestigious concours events, and was displayed at the inaugural Concours d'Elégance de Chantilly.
