Snapshot, 1970s – Raise your glasses to the champion

It's July 1972, and Jacky Ickx is cruising into the pits — to the excitement of the fans and crew alike — after winning the six-hour Watkins Glen World Sportscar Championship race. In typical Italian style, the party has started before Ickx can even catch his breath…

With wins at Daytona, Sebring, Brands Hatch, and Monza already this year, it’s probably safe to say that Jacky Ickx and the Ferrari crew were feeling confident prior to the race this morning. Add American Mario Andretti as Ickx’s co-pilot in the Ferrari 312P, and the air of supremacy exuding from the Ferrari pits was rightfully justified. When the sixth hour started drawing to a close and the chequered flag finally dropped, their excitement could no longer be subdued. With Coca-Cola glasses filled to the brim with their beverage of choice (be it champagne or cola fizz), the team hopped onto the car for a victory lap with their Belgium hero — saluti!
