Bonhams Rolls-Royce and Bentley Sale, Kelmarsh Hall - June 21st 2008
Bonhams has been holding a sale at the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club summer meeting for many years now. The 2008 event will feature over 30 cars, one of which has (slightly tenuous) topical connotations: an ex-Sean Connery 1961 Bentley S2 Saloon, estimated at £12,000 - 15,000.
Forever - in many people’s eyes - ‘James Bond’, the Scottish actor owned the car in the late-1970s. The latest 007 novel (Devil May Care, by Sebastian Faulks), has its hero Bentley-, rather than Aston Martin-, mounted. Whatever, it’s a nice connection and looks an attractive car, finished in the classic two-tone Shell Grey/Tudor Grey with red leather interior colour combination.
1963 Bentley S3 Continental ‘Flying Spur’ Saloon - £65,000 - 70,000
Formerly the property of Jack Barclay,1936 Rolls-Royce 25/30hp Sedanca de Ville - £30,000 - 35,000
1971 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Two-Door Saloon - £12,000 - 16,000
Two-door, four-seat coupés based on the Silver Shadow platform are always popular in the Classic Driver office. The nomenclature may be fearsomely complicated but, be they badged Rolls or Bentley, one can’t help commenting that they represent A Lot of Car for the Money. Two examples grace the catalogue: a 1967 Bentley T-Series Two-Door Saloon requiring 're-commissioning' for £6,000 - 8,000, and a dark blue over silver 1971 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Two-Door Saloon at £12,000 - 16,000.
1949 Bentley MkVI 4¼-Litre Saloon - £15,000 - 25,000
1979 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II - £9,000 - 11,000
We also have a soft spot for early post-War cars that were bought by industrialists who had ‘done well out of the War’, Hollywood stars, British aristocracy residing in Switzerland or the Côte d’Azur, and Harley Street surgeons.
The Bentley MkVI, its closely related successor, the R-Type, or Rolls-Royce’s Silver Wraith and Silver Dawn were the cars to have. There are two examples of each Bentley at Kelmarsh, and pick of the crop must be the 1953 Bentley R-Type 4½-Litre at £21,000 - 25,000, although the 1949 Bentley MkVI 4¼-Litre Saloon (£15,000 - 25,000) only needs James Robertson Justice or Terry-Thomas at the wheel to complete the picture.
The ex-Earls Court Motor Show,1962 Rolls-Royce Phantom V Touring Limousine - £58,000 - 65,000
1953 Bentley R-Type 4½-Litre - £21,000 - 25,000
1921 Rolls-Royce 45/50hp Silver Ghost Salamanca Cabriolet - £80,000 - 100,000
The Rolls-Royce marque provides the nine pre-War entries, and significant cars include the 1921 Rolls-Royce 45/50hp Silver Ghost Salamanca Cabriolet (£80,000 - 100,000) and the 1926 Rolls-Royce 20hp Tourer, a car first registered to Sir Malcolm Campbell, for £50,000 - 60,000. The jaunty Palmer-bodied, 1932 Rolls-Royce 20/25hp with ‘Skiff’ coachwork looks nice at £20,000 - 30,000, too.
There are also several more modern cars at reasonable estimates, such as the 1987 Bentley Turbo R Long-Wheelbase Saloon for £11,000 - 13,000. And, if you fancy a change from two-tone S-series Bentleys, we like Lot 234, the green with biscuit leather 1956 Bentley S1 Saloon at £20,000 - 25,000.
The sale will be held at Kelmarsh Hall, Northamptonshire, on Saturday 21st June. Automobilia will start at 12:00 with motor cars at 14:00. For further information, see www.bonhams.com.
