Bonhams at the One&Only Royal Mirage Hotel, Dubai, 11 October 2010 - Review

The 46th of only 57 examples built, 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL 'Batmobile' (Estimate: $165,000 - 215,000, sold for $218,400), and 1979 BMW M1 (Estimate: $165,000 - 215,000, sold for $264,000)

The consignment by the BMW factory collection of two rare coupés to Bonhams’ inaugural Dubai sale was more than justified: the 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL ‘Batmobile’ beat its pre-sale estimate of $165,000-215,000 by some margin to finally sell for $218,400, and the 1979 BMW M1 achieved $264,000 (estimate $165,000-215,000).

It is understood that these are world record prices for the models at auction.

Elsewhere in the catalogue, the 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ Shooting Brake sold for $300,000, a Ferrari Classiche-certified 1973 Ferrari Dino 246GTS for $174,000, and the ex-Alfred H. Heineken 1965 Bentley S3 Continental DHC made $138,000.

Selling for $82,800, the 1931 Lincoln Model K Convertible Coupé with Rumble Seat showed that the sale wasn’t all about more modern classics – although the 1932 Packard Model 900 'Light Eight' failed to sell.

1973 Ferrari Dino 246GTS - Sold for $174,000

Prior to the motor cars, Bonhams auctioned a selection of fine watches. The top-selling timepiece was an 18ct gold Patek Philippe chronograph which sold for $74,400.

Commenting after the sale, James Knight, Group Head of Motoring at Bonhams, said, “We are obviously delighted with the strong results of the two BMW world records for respective models but it is the general enthusiasm and positive reactions that Middle Eastern collectors reserved for Bonhams’ first classic car sale in the area that were amazing - we are equally thrilled that the majority of the cars sold will remain in the region.”
