Bonhams Les Grandes Marques à Monaco - 21st May 2007 - Preview

When the fat, glossy catalogue announcing the entries in Bonhams’ annual Monaco sale lands on the doormat, breakfast in our house is traditionally punctuated by the sound of oohs and ahhs. This year proved no exception, the coffee left to go cold while page after page of exotica were happily scrutinised.

There’s something special about a sale which takes place within the Monégasque Royal family’s Exposition de la Collection de Voitures Anciennes – particularly when it’s at the time of the Monaco Grand Prix. The cars offered by Bonhams likewise reflect a mix of new and old, from the 2005 Ferrari FXX Berlinetta (aiming to achieve over 1.8m Euros) and 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR (100km from new, with an estimate of 700,000-800,000 Euros), to the extremely rare 1952 Jaguar XK120 Supersonic by Ghia (estimate 370,000-450,000 Euros), of which just three were ever made.

Of particular interest to buyers will be the single-owner collections which feature so prominently in this year’s sale. Most extensive is the collection of nine Aston Martins and Lagondas. With estimates ranging from 50,000 to 200,000 Euros, and including DB4, DB5, DB6, plus DB2 and DB MkIII, these Astons might not represent the rarest examples of the marque but are, en masse, a delightful illustration of one man’s passion.

1958 Maserati 3500GT Coupé - Eur 50,000 - 60,000

1981 Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo Group 5 Prototype - Eur 220,000 - 280,000

There is also a collection of four Rolls-Royces from the garage of a Monégasque, including the Phantom he bought new in 2004; and from a private Dutch collection, a further eight Gran Turismo Classic vehicles which Bonhams tells us are in pristine condition and to be sold without reserve.

1960 Aston Martin DB4 Saloon - Eur 120,000 - 150,000

1969 Ferrari 365GTC Berlinetta - Eur 120,000 - 130,000

The full lot list covers a good range of Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Maserati, Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Benz, as well as more unusual makes such as De Tomaso, Matra, Iso, Abarth, and Moretti.
